  1. A distributor is a device in the ignition
  2. system of a piston engine that distributes
  3. pulses of high-voltage electricity to the 
  4. spark plugs in the cylinders. The electricity
  5. is passed to the plug leads by the tip of a 
  6. rotor arm, driven by the engine camshaft,
  7. and current is fed to the rotor arm from the
  8. ignition coil. The distributor also houses 
  9. the contact point or breaker, which opens 
  10. and closes to interrupt the battery current
  11. to the coil, thus triggering the high-voltage
  12. pulses. With electronic ignition

  14. The word "distributor" also refers to
  15. businesses that distrubute items to other
  16. companies in their trade.
